About 80% of plastic waste from the 2022 Qatar World Cup will be recycled or composted
Qatar promises to hold a FIFA World Cup dedicated to sustainable development ™, which includes minimizing waste during the World Cup and realizing the recycling of materials. After successfully hosting 64 World Cup matches, the organizers said that more than 2000 tons of waste had been recycled or composted.
Eng. Bodour Al Meer, Executive Director of SC Sustainable Development, said: "We are very proud to announce that about 80% of the waste from various stadiums has been recycled. We have achieved a great achievement, which undoubtedly thanks to the careful planning and unremitting efforts of the event organization and relevant departments across the country."
"We, FIFA and the Organizing Committee of the 2022 Qatar World Cup have jointly promoted a set of strong plans, including a series of measures before and during the World Cup, such as using biodegradable food packaging, encouraging fans to sort and dispose of garbage and setting up garbage sorting facilities in all eight stadiums."
Alemir added: "I would like to thank all our partners, especially APEX Waste Solutions and Management Company. Their team sorted all the waste from each stadium and distributed them to the corresponding plastic, cardboard, compost, metal, glass and electronic waste recyclers."
Nasser Al Khalaf, CEO of APEX Waste Solutions and Management, said: "As a Qatar company, we are very proud to be a part of the heritage project and ensure that the 2022 Qatar World Cup can leave a legacy for future generations in terms of sustainable development. Through this cooperation with SC, we can ensure that the waste generated in the stadium can be classified and disposed on site before being sent to the recycling facilities, which also improves the recycling rate."
A major focus of the sustainable development strategy of FIFA Qatar World Cup in 2022 is to reduce waste and improve the recycling rate, especially the treatment of plastics. In order to achieve this goal, the event organizer successfully replaced plastics with compostable and reusable substitutes. If it is unavoidable to use plastics, the event organizer will try to remove them from the waste for recycling.
The event organizer actively communicated with the fans before the World Cup and encouraged them to use recyclable materials as much as possible. During the 2022 Qatar World Cup, there were also several public activities that attracted the attention and participation of fans. These activities were aimed at encouraging the use of classified and recycled garbage bins in various stadiums and World Cup related facilities. The success of these measures during the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup will surely bring lasting inheritance, and the concept of using recyclable materials will also be deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, and will continue to play an indispensable role in the waste management in Qatar.
